Sinabong ang kinabukasan: Ex-Leyte mayor Charita Chan sentenced to jail over illegal cockfights

Former Babatngon, Leyte mayor Charita Chan has been sentenced to prison for permitting illegal weekly cockfights in her municipality.
The Sandiganbayan 5th Division has found Chan guilty of of graft and has sentenced her to imprisonment ranging from six to seven years.
The court also meted Chan with perpetual disqualification from holding public office.
In its decision, the court pointed out that when she was still mayor she issued a permit in 2012 to the Liga ng mga Barangay to conduct weekly cockfights.
However, the court pointed out the Liga is not entitled to operate cockfights “considering that the league is composed of barangay officials who are prohibited from having interests in cockpit operations” under Section 89(a)(2) of the Local Government Code.
“Thus, it was undoubtedly irregular for the accused to grant a Mayor’s Permit to the Liga ng mga Barangay ‘to hold cockfight at the Barangay District III, Babatngon, Leyte, every Saturday’ to which it is not legally entitled,” it ruled.
