‘Sagay 9’ lawyer killed in Negros
Human rights lawyer Atty. Benjamin Ramos, a lawyer of the families of the nine sugarcane farmers massacred in Sagay, was murdered on Tuesday night in Kabankalan, Negros Occidental.
A founding member of the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NULP), Ramos was gunned down by motorcycle-riding men in Barangay Binucuil.
The 56-year-old lawyer was pronounced dead on arrival at the Holy Mother of Mercy Kabankalan City Hospital.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the NULP described the Negros-based lawyer as a “passionate, dedicated and articulate yet amiable and jolly.”
He was the “go-to pro-bono lawyer of peasants, environmentalists, activists, political prisoners, and mass organizations in Negros,” the group said.
Other NULP members have also been attacked and killed for “practicing their profession and advocacies in the courts, in rallies, in picket lines, in urban poor communities, and in fact-finding mission,” according to them.
“These beastly attacks by treacherous cowards cannot go on,” the NUPL said.
