Remollo says people should respect Duterte’s decision to abolish Island Region

Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo is asking Negrenses to respect the decision of President Rodrigo R. Duterte to abolish the Negros Island Region (NIR).

The mayor acknowledged that government had to dissolve the Negros Island Region due to lack of funds as manifested by the national authorities, according to City Public Information Officer Dems Rey Demecillo on Friday.

Demecillo said that if only NIR was created through legislation, the merger of the two provinces would have been permanent.

With the dissolution of NIR, Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental would revert to the administrative jurisdictions of Central Visayas and Western Visayas, respectively.

President Duterte had signed early this week Executive Order No. 38 which revoked Executive Order 138 of the previous administration creating the NIR, citing mainly budgetary constraints. (PNA)
