Osmeña: Duterte will listen to Cebuanos, won’t cancel BRT project
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña expressed confidence that President Rodrigo Duterte will not cancel the multi-billion Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project even amid the objection of Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Michael Dino to the scheme.
Osmeña said that Duterte will surely listen to Cebuanos, who supported him last elections, over Dino.
Dino earlier objected to the BRT project, saying it will cause more traffic congestion due to narrow roads of the city. Instead, he wants Cebu to have a light rail transit (LRT) system.
However, Osmeña said that the LRT is more expensive on the part of commuters and the government.
He said that the government needs to subsidize the LRT system, which means forgone billions of revenues that could be used in other matters instead.
Osmeña added that the BRT will only cost around P8 to P9 per ride compared to at least P30 for LRT.
