Only criminals and those engaged in wrongdoing have reason to fear the newly signed National ID system, Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. said.

Marañon also said the measure, which President Rodrigo Duterte signed last Monday, Aug. 6, should have become a law a long time ago.

“It should have been passed a long time ago,” he said, adding “the law is good for the country’s security.”

He noted the world’s biggest problem at this time right is security with the proliferation of terrorists.

With the new law, he said “you could accost and require any suspicious-looking person to identify himself.”

Only those “in the underworld and those opposing the government as well as those who are hiding something would oppose the law,” he added.

Marañon also said he believes the country can effectively implement the law due to “the availability of modern technology.”
