A newspaper columnist based in Iloilo City landed in the news on Wednesday, after he was punched by a barangay official.

Herbert Vego, 68, a columnist of Panay News, filed a complaint for slight physical injury against Barangay Libertad chairman Sumakwel Nava.

Vego, in his complaint lodged before the Iloilo City Prosecutor’s Office, said Nava hit him twice in the face at the Hotel del Rio, with no provocation (

He said he sustained bruises in the face after the attack. He said he was having coffee when Nava hit him.

Several bystanders and a waiter grabbed and pacified Nava before he could continue attacking Vego.

Vego said politics and the 2019 elections may have been the motive for the attack, which he said occurred after he wrote about Rep. Jerry Trenas’ plan to run for mayor next year.

Trenas’ plan to run for mayor may pit him against Nava’s son Plaridel, an incumbent councilor who is reportedly eyeing the mayoralty post in 2019.

The younger Nava also accused Vego of acting as Trenas’ “PR man.”

On the other hand, the younger Nava claimed the incident stemmed from “money” he owed his father.
