Last minute! Iloilo university cancels Imee Marcos’ speaking engagement
Did a university in Iloilo City turn down an activity of Ilocos Norte Governor Ma. Imelda Josefa “Imee” Marcos at the last minute?
Social media users said the Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT-U) scrapped the reservation for Marcos, daughter of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
But ISAT-U spokesperson Heinz Gumaquil said he did not see any protest action, adding they will look into the matter (https://thedailyguardian.net/local-news/was-imee-marcos-barred-from-using-iloilo-universitys-hall/).
“As far as I know, there was a reservation made although we did not know that if it was for Governor Marcos,” he said.
In a statement, the university denied allegations of turning down the reservation for Mar
Gumaquil said the Society Agri Venture Enterprises, Inc. (SAVE, Inc.) rented the audio-visual room for the event.
But with the Alumni homecoming scheduled on the same date, the Industry, Linkages and Development Office of the university requested a certain Maria Carina Prias, SAVE, Inc. representative, to place Imee’s welcome streamer in front of the venue instead of hanging it on the gate.
Gumaquil also denied that ISAT-U and students participated in a protest action against Marcos (https://thedailyguardian.net/local-news/iloilo-university-denies-snubbing-imee-marcos/).
Earlier posts on Facebook said the ISAT-U took down welcome streamers for Marcos and picketed to force the abortion of the event.
Gumaquil said he learned about the event Saturday morning when he arrived at the campus for the university’s Alumni Day.
He said he is “not privy” on why Marcos’ event was canceled, adding the event was a “legitimate reservation.”
