Iloilo vice mayor Espinosa replaces Mabilog in city hall

After the Office of the Ombudsman dismissed Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, Vice Mayor Jose Espinosa III has been named to replace him.

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) appointed Espinosa as the city’s new mayor on Monday (October 30) as it implemented the dismissal order of the Ombudsman.

Overall Deputy Ombudsman Melchor Arthur Carandang issued the decision to dismiss Mabilog after finding him guilty of serious dishonesty.

Apart from dismissal, Mabilog was also meted with cancellation of his civil service eligibility, forfeiture of his retirement benefits, and perpetual disqualification from holding public office.

The case stemmed from the complaint filed by Iloilo provincial administrator Manuel Mejorada who saidMabilog had an P8,938,082.52 net worth increase within a span of one year based on his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networth (SALN) in 2012 and 2013..

The Ombudsman said Mabilog failed to explain how he was able to acquire properties in the amount which are really out of proportion to his salaries and other lawful income.

“Thus, there is prima facie evidence of unexplained wealth,” it said.

“Moreover, it is also significant to note that respondent also failed to present proof of income from the business interests disclosed in his SALNs,” it added.

President Rodrigo Duterte had previously identified Mabilog as one of the country’s narcopoliticians.
