Cebu Mayor Osmeña lectures Duterte: Matuto kang makinig
If President Rodrigo Duterte sees himself as a leader, then he should learn how to listen.
This was Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña’s unsolicited advice to the Chief Executive after the latter threatened to disregard the opinion of the Supreme Court (SC) and Congress when it comes to his implementation of Martial Law.
“The best quality of a leader is an ability to listen, that’s all I can say. My suggestion is you listen,” Osmeña was quoted as saying Monday (May 29) in a SunStar Online report.
The mayor belongs to the Liberal Party (LP), which was supplanted as the top party in the country by Duterte’s PDP-Laban following the May 2016 polls.
Duterte gave his latest controversial remarks about refusing to listen to magistrates and lawmakers in a speech before government troops who had been fighting off Maute Group terrorists in Marawi City.
On May 23, Duterte placed the entirety of Mindanao under Martial Law due to the Maute’s attack on Marawi.
The SC continues to function under a state of Martial Law, meaning it can hear petitions questioning the President’s declaration. On the other hand, Congress, voting in a joint session, can opt to revoke the declaration of military rule.
